Having the option to safeguard your conversations is a bonus for everyone. Whatsapp introduced a fingerprint feature that allows users to do just that. Enabling this feature ensures that no one else can access your chats.
There are those friends or relatives who have no respect for boundaries. They either go through your private chats or the photos in your WhatsApp. With this lock, you are sure that no one will have access to your messages. It allows you to put your phone down without the constant worry of your privacy being violated.
This feature had first been introduced for the iOS users where they could either use ‘Face ID’ or ‘Touch ID’ to lock the app. Several months later, the same feature has been introduced for Android users. It is however only for Whatsapp beta users for now.

Enabling Fingerprint Lock on WhatsApp
First, you have to make sure that you are using WhatsApp beta for Android. The next step is to upgrade to the latest version which will have the fingerprint feature. Once this is done, follow these steps to enable the fingerprint lock in WhatsApp on your Android phone:
- Open your WhatsApp and tap on the three dots on the right-hand side to get the settings
- Then go to settings and tap on ‘Account’
- Tap on privacy then navigate to ‘fingerprint lock’ then tap on it
- Toggle the switch since it is off by default
- Once that is done, you will need to confirm your fingerprint then set the duration it should take for the phone to lock. This could either be immediate, after 1 minute or 30 minutes of inactivity.
With the duration of time, choosing to lock immediately would mean that you would need to authenticate each time you open the app. This is a good thing for those who are very keen on privacy. However, it can also prove to be annoying especially if you are an avid user. It is also important to note that you can answer WhatsApp calls without opening the app with your fingerprint.
You can also enable ‘Show content in notification’ to see a preview of all your messages even with the fingerprint lock enabled. This is a good addition especially when you just want to reply to selected messages and cannot keep opening the app each time you get a text.
iOS (iPhone and iPad)
iOS users also enjoy using the fingerprint lock either on their iPhones or iPads. It is available for iPhone 5s or later and also iOS 9+. It works the same as the Android version, however, with iOS, users have the option of touch ID or face ID. Having this feature will keep people off and prevent anyone from scrolling through your private conversations. To enable fingerprint lock in WhatsApp on iPhone and iPad, follow the steps below:
- Open Whatsapp
- Go to settings and tap on it
- Navigate to ‘Account’ then tap on privacy
- Scroll down to screen lock and toggle it on
Once that is done you’ll need to turn on Touch ID or Face ID in your iPhone settings. After enabling the fingerprint lock you’ll have three choices for the duration after which the lock should be prompted. Either immediately, after 15 minutes or after an hour.
You will, however, be able to reply to texts from the notification bar and answer voice calls. In this case, if anyone decides to take advantage to access your chats by clicking on the text from the notification, the fingerprint authentication will then be required
To enable or disable previews, you just go to settings then select notifications. Navigate to ‘shoe previews’ and either choose to turn it on or off.
In case the fingerprint authentication fails, you have the option of using your phone’s passcode.
Having this feature for WhatsApp is a win for everyone who values their privacy. It is very easy to figure out and enable it to your WhatsApp. As the days go by, Whatsapp may roll out the same feature for the main app for android users. With such a feature you are assured that whatever you don’t want being seen by others is safe and well guarded. Whether you are an Android or an iOS user, take advantage of the fingerprint lock to be safe.
